Nowadays, distance-learning programmes enable people to study online and access education whenever they want. As a result, they are becoming increasingly popular. However, some people argue that they can never be as effective as courses taken at colleges or universities because they lack face-to-face interaction. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that distance learning can be just as beneficial for the reasons discussed below.
Admittedly, distance learning can be boring. Since it may not involve much human interaction, it can be difficult to maintain students' interest throughout their studies. When people study alongside others and work in groups, they are more likely to exchange ideas, compare notes, and develop their communication skills, which makes the learning process more engaging. For example, when I started studying a Harvard BI programme online, I struggled to learn new concepts on my own and often felt isolated. This was because there was nobody to discuss ideas with or explain difficult concepts to me, which made me slightly demotivated.
Despite this drawback, I strongly believe that the advantages of distance learning are more significant. First of all, it allows people to study remotely. In some countries, access to education is limited, and many people live in poverty. Therefore, distance learning can help them educate themselves without attending a university or college in person. A student from Afghanistan provides a compelling example. Although he studied a project management programme in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, he obtained a qualification that helped him develop his skills and secure a remote job in Japan.
Furthermore, distance learning helps people save both time and money. Many individuals struggle with tight budgets and busy schedules, and online education can be a practical solution. By studying from home or the workplace, learners can enjoy a more affordable, convenient, and flexible way of learning while avoiding long and costly commutes. For example, MIT offers special discounts for students. Learners can simply sign up and study at their own pace.
In conclusion, although distance learning can sometimes be less engaging due to the lack of face-to-face interaction, I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. It provides educational opportunities for people around the world, saves time and money, and allows learners to study flexibly from almost anywhere.
Examiner feedback
This is a strong essay that demonstrates clear progression, logical organization, and a high level of grammatical control. To reach the highest bands, the candidate should focus on incorporating more uncommon lexical items and ensuring that all nuances of the prompt—specifically the comparison of 'quality'—are explored with even greater depth.
Task Response - 8
- The response sufficiently addresses all parts of the task, presenting a well-developed position on distance learning versus in-person education. - Ideas are extended and supported with relevant personal and hypothetical examples (e.g., the student from Afghanistan and the MIT example). - The conclusion clearly restates the author's position and summarizes the main arguments effectively.
Coherence & Cohesion - 8
- Information and ideas are sequenced logically with a clear progression from the introduction to the conclusion. - Cohesive devices such as 'Admittedly', 'Despite this drawback', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively and naturally to link ideas. - Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic.
Lexical Resource - 7
- A sufficient range of vocabulary is used to allow for some flexibility and precision (e.g., 'compelling example', 'costly commutes', 'demotivated'). - There is awareness of style and collocation, though some expressions are slightly repetitive or standard (e.g., 'time and money'). - Spelling and word formation are accurate, though the use of 'BI programme' could be more precisely defined as 'Business Intelligence'.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy - 8
- The writer uses a wide range of structures, including complex sentences and conditional forms, with high accuracy. - The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is well-controlled throughout. - Only very minor slips occur, which do not interfere with the clarity of the arguments.
