The question whether dangerous extreme sports should be banned has always sparked widespread debate. While some claim that these sports have a serious risk they pose to participants, I totally disagree with this argument and believe that individuals have their own right to make independent decisions and these types of sports provide physical and psychological benefits.
Perhaps the most compelling reason why extreme sports should not be banned is that they allow individuals exercise their creativity and freedom of choice. Although I acknowledge the fact that dangerous activities have a considerable risk of injury or even the death of an athlete. I personally content that individual freedom is much more important rather than implementing unnecessary regulations. When participants take all risk into account and take full responsibility for their decision, which encourages independence and freedom. This can be exemplified by skydivers, who carefully follow strict safety regulations and check equipment to minimize risk before every jump. Therefore protecting individual freedom can be the main reason for legalization of extreme sports.
Besides these, I firmly believe that psychological and mental benefits of extreme sports are far more significant that their potential drawbacks. Since participants overcome their psychological and physical limits, they develop greater resilience and self-confidence. A perfect case in point would be rock climbers who strengthen both muscle and decision-making skills through years of training. Thus, the physical and mental benefits of extreme sports yield substantial personal development.
In conclusion, although some people believe that extreme sports should be banned due to potential risk. I totally disagree with this statement and content that respecting individuals freedom and encouraging physical and mental development can be much more beneficial rather than banning these types of sport.
Examiner feedback
The essay achieves a solid Band 6.5 by clearly addressing the prompt and maintaining a consistent viewpoint. The score is primarily limited by recurring grammatical fragments and minor word-choice errors, though the vocabulary range and task coverage are strong enough to reach the 7.0 threshold in Task Response.
Task Response - 7
- Addresses all parts of the task by arguing against the ban and providing specific reasons (freedom and personal growth). - Presents a clear position throughout the response, which is consistently maintained from the introduction to the conclusion. - Main ideas are extended and supported with examples (skydivers, rock climbers), although some supporting ideas lack focus due to grammatical slips.
Coherence & Cohesion - 6
- Information is arranged coherently with a clear overall progression from introduction to conclusion. - Paragraphing is used, but the internal cohesion of the first body paragraph is somewhat mechanical with repetitive sentence structures. - Cohesive devices like 'Besides these' are used, though they can occasionally feel slightly unnatural or overused.
Lexical Resource - 7
- Uses a sufficient range of vocabulary (e.g., 'resilience', 'compelling reason', 'unnecessary regulations') to allow for some flexibility. - Shows some awareness of style and collocation, though there are minor inaccuracies like 'I personally content' (instead of 'contend'). - Vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and enables the writer to convey precise meanings regarding the benefits of sports.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy - 6
- A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is used, but there are several fragments (e.g., sentences starting with 'Although' or 'When' that lack a main clause). - Grammatical errors are present, such as 'individual freedom is much more important rather than' and 'the death of an athlete', but they do not impede communication. - Punctuation control is inconsistent, particularly with the misuse of full stops where commas should be.
