The provided table displays total number regarding US internet searches in November 2004 and in September 2010. The linegraph, in turn, delineates percentages of 5 platforms, including Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL and Ask Jeeves which were used for search trends throughout 6 years period.
Overall, what is particularly striking about the data is that the total number of US searches witnessed a significant growth. Regarding linegraph it was Google that remained the most used search engine. In contrast, it was AOL and AskJeeves, whose figures were recorded as the least significant.
The tabular chart compares the percentage of online seachers, which was 4.5 biliion in November 2004, climbing up to 16 billion by the end of the period. What the line graph demonstrates is Google's overwhelming dominance, its market share having climbed sharply from roughly 35% in 2004 to over 60% by September 2010. Yahoo, however, underwent a steady decline from approximately 30% to 20%.
The remaining data reveals that Microsoft usage was quite steady, 15%, with a negligible drop in May. The category that experienced a downward trend was Ask Jeeves, which fell from 10% to a mere 4%, being recorded as the least popular way to search up for information online by 2010. AOL's percentages which were least dominant in the beginning of the period maintained a consistent trajectory but surpassing Ask Jeeves by August and being recorded at around 8%.
Examiner feedback
The response is well-structured and clearly identifies the most significant trends in both the table and graph. To reach a higher band, focus on eliminating minor spelling errors (e.g., 'biliion') and refining the accuracy of your descriptions for smaller data fluctuations.
Task Achievement - 7
- The response covers all key features of both the table and the line graph, including the massive growth in search volume. - A clear overview is provided, highlighting the general trend of growth and Google's dominance. - Data is accurately cited (4.5 billion to 16 billion), though more specific comparisons between the engines' finishing points could strengthen the analysis.
Coherence & Cohesion - 7
- Paragraphs are logically organized, separating the overview, the main engine (Google/Yahoo), and the smaller engines. - Cohesive devices such as 'in turn', 'however', and 'the remaining data' are used effectively to guide the reader. - The progression is clear, though some referencing like 'whose figures' could be more precise.
Lexical Resource - 7
- The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, with terms like 'overwhelming dominance', 'negligible drop', and 'consistent trajectory'. - There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice (e.g., 'seachers' instead of 'searches' and 'tabular chart'). - Natural collocations are used effectively for the most part.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy - 7
- A variety of complex structures are used, including participle clauses ('its market share having climbed') and relative clauses. - Grammar and punctuation are generally well-controlled, though minor errors in articles and prepositions exist. - Error-free sentences are frequent, but there are some awkward phrasing choices like 'search up for information'.
