The charts illustrate changes in educational participation and the highest level of education attained by adults in Singapore between 2000 and 2010.

Overall, the average number of years spent at school increased steadily for both genders, with males consistently spending longer in education than females. At the same time, there was a clear shift in the population towards higher educational qualifications, particularly at university and postgraduate levels.

In terms of participation, adult males spent approximately nine years in education in 2000, compared with around eight years for females. These figures rose gradually over the decade, reaching about 11.5 years for men and just over nine years for women by 2010. Although the gender gap remained, it narrowed slightly as female participation increased at a comparable rate.

Regarding educational attainment, in 2000 the largest proportions of adults had completed secondary school or only primary education, while relatively small percentages held university or master’s qualifications. By 2010, however, the proportion of adults with university degrees and postgraduate qualifications had grown substantially, whereas those with only primary education declined sharply. This indicates a significant overall improvement in educational levels across the adult population.
