The line graph illustrates the transformations in the UK steel industry from 1970 to 2000.
Overall, the number of employees experienced a downward trend throughout the period. Both the total UK demand and UK steel production decreased, while import rose gradually.
In 1970, employees numbers stood at around 48000. This figure saw a moderate decrease to 40000 in 1980. For the following 20 years, it gradually declined , reaching its lowest point at about 15000.
The combined total of UK demand initially was at 200000 tonnes. Declining to just above 175000 tonnes in 1980, it dropped significantly to 100000 tonnes in 2000. Similarly, the figure for produced steel experienced a considerable decrease, starting at approximately 175000 tonnes in 1970, before falling to around 85000 tonnes in 2000. The import rate was the lowest category with approximately 12500 tonnes. However, it gradually increased to just above 25000 in 1990, which was followed with significant increase to about 60000 tonnes in 2000.
